Chapter

Twenty-Nine

Jace spun, feet on the catwalk, ready to defend his sister.

She leapt through the entrance after him and slammed the door, the inscriptions glowing once more as something heavy crashed into the door from the other side.

Jace glanced at her, surprised at her action.

“It’s important to know when to fight and when to use other resources at your disposal to get what you want,” Brede said, turning away from the entrance where the beast crashed against it again. “The wisest cultivators know which battles are necessary, which ones they are all but guaranteed to win, and those which they will lose but must fight anyway.” She glanced at him. “That battle was entirely unnecessary.”

Jace nodded in acknowledgment, unwilling to open his mouth and get the taste of the foul air in his mouth. He wouldn’t complain about not fighting another beast.

He turned with her and found Sami and Alira with weapons drawn, the bodies of two ugly insect-looking monsters laying at their feet.

Apparently there were beasts that didn’t mind the stench of the sewers.

Ramu and his robyns stood to the side, looking around the area with interest.

“As I suspected,” Ramu said. “Ngai had to compensate for his generous, frequent dumping of crap from himself by making the sewer large.”

“You don’t like Ngai much, do you?” Brede asked from where she stood beside Jace.

“I like that I don’t have to pay him to defend my palace,” Ramu said. “Though if I could find someone as equally adept to the challenge, I’d dismiss him in an instant. Such a filthy mouth on that man, not to mention–” Ramu gestured down the sewer–“he smells.”

Brede gave Ramu a roguish grin, then glanced at Jace. “I like him,” she said. “He’s got good taste if he dislikes Ngai but was willing to help you.

Jace didn’t know how he felt about his sister taking such a liking to a madman, but he couldn’t disagree that Ramu seemed to at least have the same feelings about people as the rest of them.

Brede turned away from him and looked around the sewer.

Jace did likewise, taking in the area quickly. As Ramu had said during their first talk about the sewers, the pipeline was in fact very large. The line was twice as wide as the tunnel they came through in the wall, and they stood on a catwalk suspended several feet above the channel that held the refuse. Large light stones set with almost too much space between them provided minimal illumination for the sludge below.

Jace looked along the sides of the pipeline, hoping that similar catwalks ran the length of the line that they could use rather than getting down into the muck.

The Heavens didn’t smile on him in that regard.

“Everyone—” He choked when he opened his mouth, the repulsive taste gathering on his tongue.

He’d be drinking a lot of wine after this to get that flavor out.

“Take this powder and rub it all over yourself,” Jace said, handing out vials. “Don’t put it on your lower body since the sewage will just wash it away.
